Got hit by a clean hook – boxing sparring

I have been back to light/moderate sparring since last week – about 3 to 4 rounds. Sparring is one of the joys of boxing/MMA. It is where you test what you have learned. Is the footwork good? How about head movement? How about feinting? How about speed? Sparring brings me so much joy…

Until I got hit with a very good right hook last night. I usually spar light. The brain is a billion dollar asset as they say! But last night, I unintentionally hit my partner with a really good cross. I feinted the jab, he countered leaving him open, as my cross landed his face perfectly. I immediately told him “sorry”! I hate seeing my partner get hurt when it is supposed to be just a friendly sparring session where we get to enjoy and learn.

I already knew that cross woke him up. He was “okay” with it, but I knew he was out to get me. We traded more punches and counter punches. And then he landed a really good hook. I knew there was no intention to hurt me but that hook was super clean. I was really excited for him.

Today, my head is hurting! I have had sparring sessions like this in the past. I always tell myself that it is not worth getting hit like this when this is just a hobby. But sparring is fun. What a predicament!
